The Carolina Panthers want to talk with the soon-to-be Most Valuable Player’s play-caller.
As first reported by NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport on Monday evening, the team has requested permission to interview Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken for their head-coaching position. Monken, per Rapoport, has also received a request from the Los Angeles Chargers.
His name has come into demand upon orchestrating an impressive campaign for the NFL’s sixth-ranked offense, a unit that has averaged 370.4 total yards per game. Leading the offense is current MVP favorite Lamar Jackson, who Monken has helped pass for a career-high 3,678 yards.
Prior to joining the Ravens in 2023, Monken was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the two-time national champion Georgia Bulldogs. His run in Athens lasted from 2020 to 2022.
The 57-year-old also has prior experience as an NFL play-caller. He served as the offensive coordinator for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 2016 to 2018 and for the Cleveland Browns in 2019.
Monken is now the third known candidate for the Panthers’ head-coaching gig, with Cincinnati offensive coordinator Brian Callahan and Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson also reportedly receiving requests.
