Panthers plan to play QB Baker Mayfield into 2nd quarter vs. Bills

Friday will give us our best preseason look yet at Baker Mayfield and the Panthers offense.

Friday is going to give us the best sneak peek of the 2022 Carolina Panthers we’ve gotten so far. And that little preview, of course, will include their new starting quarterback.

Head coach Matt Rhule spoke to reporters on Wednesday, about 53 hours before his team kicks off their third and final preseason contest of the summer. When asked how long he plans on playing Baker Mayfield against the Buffalo Bills, Rhule gave a rough estimate.

“Yeah, we’re gonna play Baker into the second quarter, we hope,” he said. “Again, we’ll play it by feel, too. It could be earlier, it could be later. We’ll kinda get a feel for, ‘Hey, we’ve had enough,’ and go on. After that, put Sam [Darnold] in and then we’ll finish with PJ [Walker].”

Although Buffalo will not be playing their starters, this’ll be the most revealing look into Mayfield and the offense. His first outing, albeit a very brief one, was a successful venture—as the fifth-year passer led the Panthers to a 13-play scoring drive on the team’s opening touch of the preseason.
