Justin Fields probably will not fall to the Panthers at No. 8. That said, If NFL draft history teaches us anything, it’s that you can’t discount any scenario, aside from perhaps a total-consensus No. 1 pick. Given all the intense buzz about Mac Jones potentially going to San Francisco, we certainly can’t rule this one out.
In a new two-round mock by Luke Easterling at Draft Wire, Fields drops into Carolina’s lap, fulfilling the dream scenario we have been hoping for this entire offseason.
Even after trading three picks to the Jets for Sam Darnold it seems nuts to pass on Fields if he’s available. Given what has been reported about Carolina’s interest in Fields – the word love was used at one point – it would certainly come as a surprise if they select anyone else.
Adding Fields would make the Darnold trade look like an awful panic move, but the Panthers have to keep taking their chances until they find a true franchise starter QB. As of yet, Darnold has not proven that he’s at that level.
Field’s ludicrous performance against Clemson in the Sugar Bowl says everything you need to know about his potential.

After taking Fields, the Panthers turn their attention to protection in Easterling’s mock.
With their second-round pick (No. 39 overall) Carolina chose Fields’ college teammate, Buckeyes iOL Wyatt Davis.
Davis (6-foot-4, 315 pounds) should be able to start at right guard right away in the NFL. If Carolina drafts him, odds are he’d beat out John Miller for that spot. Let’s take a look at his tape from Ohio State.
