Given the team’s recent struggles, the three-week absence of Carolina Panthers linebacker Shaq Thompson felt more like three months. At least his return was well worth the wait.
With the Atlanta Falcons driving steadily downfield, assuredly headed to expand their 10-6 lead deep into the second quarter, Thompson provided an abrupt stop to the possession. The backer swooped in and picked off quarterback Matt Ryan at the Panthers’ 15-yard line on a pass intended for tight end Hayden Hurst.

The interception, his second of the season, brings his career total up to three. So, yes, Thompson has twice as many picks in his new No. 7 uniform through five games than he did in six years and 86 games as No. 54.
Thompson’s takeaway accounted for Ryan’s fifth interception of the campaign. The 36-year-old passer came into Sunday’s Week 8 contest against Carolina having thrown just one pick in his previous four games.
Welcome back, Shaq.
