Panthers GM Scott Fitterer, HC Matt Rhule present at Duke’s Mayo Bowl

The Panthers will probably have their eyes locked in on Tar Heels QB Sam Howell during today’s Duke’s Mayo Bowl.

Given their numerous failures in evaluating the position over the past few years, the Carolina Panthers have to start getting a bit resourceful when it comes to finding a franchise quarterback. But, at least for today, part of that search is staying local.

As noted by ESPN NFL Draft analyst Jordan Reid, general manager Scott Fitterer and head coach Matt Rhule are in attendance for today’s Duke’s Mayo Bowl. Formerly known as the Continental Tire Bowl, the Meineke Car Care Bowl and the Belk Bowl—the 20th annual clash at the Panthers’ home of Bank of America Stadium will match the University of North Carolina Tar Heels up against the University of South Carolina Gamecocks.

And forget condiments, automobile parts and department stores. Much of Thursday’s focus for Carolina, in the battle of these Carolinas, is likely on Tar Heels passer Sam Howell.

Howell, in what’s looking to be a relatively light and unpredictable class of quarterbacks, is currently projected to be a mid-first round pick by Draft Wire editor Luke Easterling. As the order stands heading into Week 17, the Panthers are in possession of the seventh overall spot of the round.

The 6-foot-1, 220-pound Waynesville, N.C. native has flashed his dual-threat ability in 2021—having thrown for 2,851 yards and 23 touchdowns while adding another 825 yards and 11 scores on the ground over 11 games. He and his Tar Heels kick off against the Gamecocks at 11:30 a.m. ET.
