Panthers elevate RB Reggie Bonnafon from practice squad to active roster

The Panthers have elevated running back Reggie Bonnafon from the practice squad to the active roster ahead of tomorrow’s road matchup with the Chargers. Bonnafon offers more depth with All-Pro starter Christian McCaffrey on the injured reserve list due to a high ankle sprain.

The team’s six-year veteran Mike Davis will be starting in McCaffrey’s place this week, so Bonnafon will be backing him up. It’s impossible to know how offensive coordinator Joe Brady will split up the playing time at this spot. It shouldn’t come as a shock if Bonnafon has a significant snap count, though.

Last season, Bonnafon was efficient in his limited action on the field. He posted 116 yards on 16 carries (7.3 yards per rush). Most of that production came in just one game, though – Week 5 against the Jaguars when McCaffrey was injured.

Brady has other rushing options, as well. Trenton Cannon is the other running back on the depth chart and may be used on an occasional third down. The wild cards in his deck are defensive back Myles Hartsfield and wide receivers Curtis Samuel and D.J. Moore, who all have some ability as ball-carriers.
