Russell Wilson continues to excel when facing pressure

Despite facing pressure at the third highest rate in the NFL, Russell Wilson has the league’s second best passer rating against pressure.

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson has always handled being under pressure well, and the 2019 season is no different.

So far this season, Wilson has a passer rating of 108.7 when under pressure, which ranks second in the NFL behind Derek Carr of the Oakland Raiders (109.2).

The key difference, however, is that Wilson has still seen the third highest rate of pressure (41.8 percent of dropbacks) this season – despite clear evidence that he succeeds when faced with it.

Of course, Wilson’s passer rating without pressure is still much better, so teams may just be taking the lesser of two evils by applying pressure. Wilson does end up getting sacked quite a bit, as a veteran offensive line has battled injuries and ineffectiveness for much of the season, which has forced Wilson to use his legs more than in years past.

The Seahawks are 8-2 thanks almost exclusively to Wilson’s heroics throughout the season, and the MVP candidate will take a much deserved break this weekend before heading to Philadelphia to take on the Eagles in Week 12.

The UFC is back in Brazil this week with a longtime middleweight heading to 205 pounds for the first time.

UFC on ESPN+ 22 takes place Saturday at Ginásio do Ibirapuera in Sao Paulo. The card streams on ESPN+.

(Click here to open a PDF of the staff picks grid in a separate window.)

[lawrence-related id=462238,462387,462824]

In the main event, [autotag]Jan Blachowicz[/autotag] (24-8 MMA, 7-5 UFC) takes on longtime 185-pound standout [autotag]Ronaldo Souza[/autotag] (26-7 MMA, 9-4 UFC), who is moving to light heavyweight for the first time. Blachowicz is as much as a 2-1 favorite at some sports books, and nine of our 13 MMA Junkie editors, writers, radio hosts and videographers are picking him to win in hostile territory.

In the co-main event, [autotag]Paul Craig[/autotag] (12-4 MMA, 4-4 UFC) travels into hostile territory to take on former light heavyweight champion and longtime fan favorite [autotag]Mauricio Rua[/autotag] (26-11 MMA, 10-9 UFC). “Shogun” is a heavy favorite, and all but one of our pickers are taking him to beat Craig.

Also on the main card, only two pickers are taking [autotag]Jared Gordon[/autotag] (15-3 MMA, 3-2 UFC) to upset [autotag]Charles Oliveira[/autotag] (27-8 MMA, 15-8 UFC) in their lightweight bout. Oliveira is the heaviest favorite on the card at -450.

A pair of promotional newcomers from Dana White’s Contender Series meet at middleweight when [autotag]Antonio Arroyo[/autotag] (9-2 MMA, 0-0 UFC) takes on [autotag]Andre Muniz[/autotag] (18-4 MMA, 0-0 UFC). It’s a close fight with the oddsmakers, who have it nearly a pick’em with just a slight betting edge to Muniz. But Muniz has the picks lead from our staff members in a 12-1 blowout.

And to open the main card, [autotag]Markus Perez[/autotag] (11-2 MMA, 2-2 UFC) is a slight favorite against [autotag]Wellington Turman[/autotag] (15-3 MMA, 0-1 UFC) at middleweight, but our pickers have Perez with a heavy 10-3 lead.

In the MMA Junkie reader consensus picks, Blachowicz (61%), Rua (64 percent), Oliveira (95 percent), Muniz (53 percent) and Perez (56 percent) are the choices.

Check out all the picks above.

Ryan Finley’s development and other top storylines for Bengals vs. Raiders

Here are some top storylines in Bengals vs. Raiders.

The Cincinnati Bengals don’t have an easy task in front of them against the Oakland Raiders if Zac Taylor is to avoid matching Dave Shula’s 0-10 start.

An A.J. Green-led injury report isn’t kind to the Bengals, nor is the state of the opposition. The Raiders have won two in a row, sit at 5-4 and appear on an upswing.

Here are some of the top storylines to know heading into the game.

Ryan Finley’s development: Last week was Finley’s welcome-to-the-NFL moment. The fourth-round pick accounted for 14 Ravens points off his turnovers in a 49-13 loss. That would’ve lost the Bengals the game if the Ravens offense hadn’t scored at all. But coaches spoke highly of Finley and understand growing pains were part of the plan. Can he eliminate some of those behind a messy offensive line against a Raiders defense with 20 sacks and 57 pressures? Whether he can or not has much more riding on the outcome than this week alone.

Revving up the running game: Joe Mixon and Co. have been silent for most of the season. The backs themselves, poor line play and equally bad scheme approach played a part. But that started to change out of the bye against the Ravens. Mixon carried it 30 times for 114 yards, and while that isn’t even four yards per tote, it’s a whole lot better than what the team put on the board in the prior eight games. If the ground game can keep trending in the right direction, it betters the chance of a win because it keeps a struggling defense off the field.

Defensive pulse: Is there a pulse at all? Coming out of a bye, the Bengals let the Ravens put up 35 points on just 23:49 of possession at 8.2 yards per pop with a four of six mark on third down. Lamar Jackson is good, but the performance wasn’t exactly out of line with past pre-bye showings. Now the task for the Bengals defense it taking a lengthy trip and attempting to stop stellar rookie running back Josh Jacobs, who has 811 yards and seven scores on a 4.8 per-carry average. Don’t forget Derek Carr, owner of a 70.8 completion percentage with 14 touchdowns against four interceptions. Preston Brown got cut and rookie Germaine Pratt will keep seeing developmental snaps, but will anything change?

European Tour player gets ‘best result for the worst golf shot you’ve ever seen’

Joachim Hansen hit a horrendous shot from the bunker but got an incredible bounce you have to see to believe.

Hitting out of a sand trap is no day at the beach for the normal golfer, but week in and week out, the professionals on television make it look easy.

Every now and then, however, a pro will look like an average Joe, which was the case on Saturday for Denmark’s Joachim Hansen during the third round of the European Tour’s Nedbank Golf Challenge.

On the par-4 sixth hole at Gary Player Country Club in Sun City, South Africa, Hansen horribly mishit his ball out of the bunker, blasting it off the hosel and into the grassy bank. What happened from there was something you have to see to believe.

Leaderboard: Nedbank Golf Challenge

“The best result for the worst golf shot you’ve ever seen,” said the broadcast.

Hansen shot a 1-under 71 on Saturday and will enter the final round T-6 at 6 under, five shots off the lead.

How come that never happens to you or me, right?

Rockets release NASA-themed teaser video for City jersey reveal

The Rockets published a NASA-themed video teasing to next Wednesday’s reveal of Houston’s new City uniforms for the 2019-20 NBA season.

The Houston Rockets published a new video teasing to their imminent reveal of new City uniforms for the 2019-20 NBA season.

The City jerseys will be revealed on Wednesday, Nov. 20, and then worn for the first time on Saturday, Nov. 30 at home versus Atlanta. Unlike recent years, these City uniforms will not feature Chinese lettering. The Rockets are then scheduled to wear the City set in all remaining Saturday games this season, home and away.

The video hints at a NASA theme, with the extended compilation including an image of the Earth from outer space; footage of several rocket launches; and astronauts on a mission.

NASA, which is short for the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration, has extensive history in Houston tracing back to the establishment of the Johnson Space Center (then named the Manned Spacecraft Center) in 1961. It was a key support facility in NASA’s quest (ultimately successful) to put a man on the moon that decade.

Similar to the plan to wear the City uniforms each Saturday, the Rockets also have a special “Flashback Friday” theme for each Friday game this season. In that program, the current Rockets will wear retro-themed Classic uniforms as part of a 25-year anniversary celebration of the 1994-95 NBA championship squad. That promotion began with last night’s win over the Indiana Pacers.

In total, Houston will have five sets of uniforms this season. The Rockets brought back their black “Statement” jerseys from last season, while the red “Icon” and white “Association” jerseys were significantly changed to incorporate a new font, modernized side panels, and the inclusion of black as a core color. Those three sets, along with the aforementioned Classic uniform, were released in June.

D’Angelo Russell is out for at least 2 weeks and the Warriors are probably cursed

Russell is the latest Warrior to go down with a major injury.

The Warriors officially announced D’Angelo Russell is out for at least two weeks after he suffered a right thumb sprain in last night’s game against the Celtics.

Russell is going to be reevaluated by the team in two weeks and might return after that point, but there’s no official timetable just yet. It’s another massive blow to a team that is now set up for an early lottery pick next season after making five straight runs to the NBA Finals.

Injuries happen. They’re a part of sports. Athletes are bigger, stronger and faster than ever and they push the body to limits that they probably shouldn’t reach on a nightly basis. No load management or preventative measure is going to stop that from happening.

With that being said, sorry to say, but the Warriors are probably cursed.

Just do the math. In the span of six months, they’ve lost an entire starting five of All-Star caliber players for, at a minimum, five games to major injuries.

  • Stephen Curry (broken wrist)
  • Klay Thompson (torn ACL)
  • Kevin Durant (torn achilles)
  • Draymond Green (torn finger ligament)
  • D’Angelo Russell (sprained thumb, knee injury)

They’ll never get Durant back and Thompson is out for the season. Curry might be up in the air. We haven’t even gotten into Kevon Looney, who has still yet to return from a hamstring injury. Same with Jacob Evans who has an adductor strain.

Last night, after Russell left yesterday’s game, Green shrugged off the team’s injury woes over the last few months.

Fair point, sure. Counterpoint: The Basketball Gods.

Maybe this is karma for adding an MVP to a 73-9 team. Maybe this is payback for leaving Oakland for the tech bros in the Chase Center. Maybe this season is a sacrifice that needed to be made for a five year run of unprecedented success. We have no idea. All we know is that it’s eerie.

But, uh, while we’re here…can someone let the Wizards know who to talk to to get this sacrifice on and popping? All I need is two years — just two. Give me a trip to the Finals and I’ll be content. That’s not much.

Seriously, though, get healthy Warriors. The NBA isn’t the same without you.

Raiders mid-season awards: Breakout and Surprise player

Raiders mid-season awards: Breakout and Surprise player

As of Thursday night, when the Browns took down the Steelers,  the Raiders moved inside the bubble for an AFC Wildcard spot. They’ve already won more games this season than they won all of last season. For that to happen, it takes a few breakout players and surprises.

Breakout player: TE Darren Waller

This time a year ago, Waller was wallowing in obscurity on the Ravens’ practice squad. A little over a week later, the Raiders signed him away from the Ravens. There was little reason for anyone to think Waller would make a massive impact for the Raiders. He had just 12 catches for 103 yards in his career, which included several suspensions for substance abuse issues.

He showed some skills early on over the final four games of the 2018 season, but still nothing that would suggest the Raiders were looking at a bonafide future star. Then came the start of the 2019 season, and in two games, he eclipsed his entire career receptions and receiving totals form his career in Baltimore. And in his third game, he blew all of those numbers out of the water as well.

Waller is the Raiders’ leading receiver by a wide margin, and it earned him a long term extension with the team. He has broken out big time. From the shackles of his addiction and the shadows of the NFL.

Surprise player: DE Benson Mayowa

We all know pass rushers are at a premium in the NFL. And yet Mayowa, in his prime, wasn’t signed until over a month into free agency. By that point, all the ‘waves’ had since past, and the scraps were washing up onshore. That’s when the Raiders signed the 28-year-old to a one-year deal.

Mayowa has gone on to lead the team with 7.0 sacks in nine games. He is a bit of a one-trick pony. He is a speed rusher, designed for obvious passing situation. But that has rarely stopped teams from spending big money on a player. Signing a guy who can put pressure on the quarterback on third and long is a valuable thing. So, why didn’t Mayowa get that kind of respect in free agency?

Well, because he is a journeyman former undrafted free agent who had just 13.0 career sacks in six NFL seasons. His career-high was 6.0 sacks, which means in nine games this season in Oakland, he has already set a new career-high. And he’s done it despite averaging around 30% of the defensive snaps, fewest of any of the team’s defensive ends.

I think it’s safe to say no one expected this level of production from Mayowa

Sixers assignee Zhaire Smith to miss Blue Coats game with injury

Philadelphia 76ers assignee Zhaire Smith will miss a second straight game in the G League.

While the Philadelphia 76ers are trying to get back on track on the road in Cleveland on Sunday, their G League affiliate, the Delaware Blue Coats, look to make it three wins in a row Saturday at home.

They will have to do so without Sixers assignee Zhaire Smith who will miss his second straight game due to right knee soreness. The second-year guard was a regular starter through the first two games before the injury. Smith has been hoping to use the G League season as a means for him to work on his offensive game, but the injury is throwing a wrench into that plan.

Smith only played six games during his rookie season due to a Jones fracture and an allergic reaction so the Sixers assigned him to the G League for him to play. Obviously, the injury is causing that plan to be derailed a bit.

The Blue Coats face off with the Canton Charge at 7:00 p.m. EST at home in Wilmington, Delaware. [lawrence-related id=19371,19363,19354]

Azeez Al-Shaair officially ruled out vs. Cardinals

The 49ers may already have their seven inactive players for Sunday vs. the Cardinals.

The already banged up 49ers got more bad injury news Saturday when linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair was unable to clear concussion protocol. By not doing so Saturday, he’s officially been ruled out for Sunday’s matchup with the Arizona Cardinals.

Al-Shaair left Monday night’s game in the second half to be evaluated for a concussion, and was later placed into concussion protocol. One of the disadvantages of playing Monday night is the short week to recoup from injuries and clear concussion protocol.

San Francisco’s linebacker depth was already a little thin following Kwon Alexander’s season-ending pec tear. Elijah Lee was behind Al-Shaair on the depth chart and will likely slide into a Sam linebacker role in base, while contributing on special teams.

Al-Shaair, an undrafted rookie, has played about 59 percent of the team’s special teams snaps this season as one of their core players on that unit. He’s also logged 41 defensive snaps, most of them coming the last three weeks with a blowout win over Carolina, then two games with Alexander hurt.

San Francisco has already ruled out DJ Jones and Joe Staley. With George Kittle, Robbie Gould and Matt Breida all doubtful, Al-Shaair ruled out, and CJ Beathard as the third quarterback, we likely have all seven of the 49ers’ required inactive players for Sunday. If anyone else gets hurt, they’ll have to operate with fewer than the 46-player maximum.
