Packers, free agent DL Everson Griffen mutually interested in potential signing

The Packers and free agent DL Everson Griffen are interested in a potential pairing.

Mike Pettine might be getting another shiny pass-rushing toy soon.

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the Green Bay Packers and former Minnesota Vikings defensive lineman Everson Griffen share a mutual interest in a potential signing.

Griffen, a four-time Pro Bowler, has spent his entire 10-year NFL career with the Vikings. He has 74.5 sacks over 147 games. He was a Pro Bowler in 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2019. Since becoming a full-time player for Mike Zimmer in 2014, Griffen has 57.0 sacks and 65 tackles for losses.

Griffen opted out of his contract in February, making him a free agent. The Vikings have expressed interest in bringing him back, but Griffen clearly has options. (Either that, or Griffen’s agent is using the Packers to expedite a return to Minnesota.)

The Packers defense is already stocked with pass-rushers. Led by Za’Darius Smith, Kenny Clark and Preston Smith, the Packers terrorized most opposing quarterbacks last season. Adding Griffen and getting a second-year jump from Rashan Gary would only amplify the pass-rushing potential of Pettine’s group.

Griffen has been especially good against the Packers during his career. Of his 74.5 sacks, 11.5 have come against the Packers, his second-most against a single team (16.0, Lions).
