Packers announce 3 new additions to practice squad, one spot left

The Packers signed WR Juwann Winfree, CB Benjie Franklin and TE Shaun Beyer to the practice squad. One spot on the 16-player practice squad remains.

One day after signing 12 players to the practice squad, the Green Bay Packers added three more on Thursday, leaving one spot left unclaimed.

The Packers announced the signing of receiver Juwann Winfree, cornerback Benjie Franklin and tight end Shaun Beyer to the 16-player practice squad.

Franklin’s signing was reported earlier Wednesday, while Winfree’s representation announced his signing later Wednesday. Reports of Beyer’s signing arrived Thursday.

Franklin, an undrafted rookie from Tarleton State, spent training camp with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Winfree, now in Year 3 in Green Bay, is starting the season on the practice squad for the second straight year after losing out to rookie Samori Toure for the No. 7 receiver spot. He played in eight games for the Packers last season.

Beyer, an undrafted free agent from Iowa, spent training camp with the Vikings after spending most of 2021 on the Denver Broncos practice squad.

The question now becomes who will take the 16th and final practice squad spot. The Packers have mentioned wanting both kicker Ramiz Ahmed and safety Micah Abernathy back on the practice squad, but there’s now room for only one player.

Ahmed could be valuable insurance behind Mason Crosby, while Abernathy made the team’s initial 53-man roster before being released to make room for Rudy Ford. It’s possible Abernathy wants to pursue a new opportunity after an impressive preseason.
