Pacers’ Bennedict Mathurin to miss rest of summer league due to injury

Mathurin will miss the final two games of the Las Vegas Summer League due to an injury.

Indiana Pacers rookie Bennedict Mathurin will miss the final two games of the Las Vegas Summer League due to a sore left big toe, the team announced on Thursday.

The injury to Mathurin is not considered to be serious as the team is holding him out of action as a precaution. It is not known when the injury first occurred but Mathurin has played in each of the Pacers’ three games to this point.

The sixth pick will finish as one of the standouts of summer league.

He averaged 19.3 points, four rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.3 steals on 38.5% shooting from 3-point range. He is one of only two lottery picks this year to have multiple 20-point outings in summer league, joining Sacramento Kings forward Keegan Murray, who has five such games.

The Pacers likely saw everything they needed from Mathurin throughout their stint in Las Vegas. He used his athleticism to create for himself and was highly effective in getting into the paint and finishing at the rim. He looked to improve each game and that resulted in a strong showing.

Known as a tremendous competitor, Mathurin likely wanted to finish out summer league with his teammates but will have to settle for an early finish. He proved to be a key player in a small sample and figures to be a great addition to the lineup next season and beyond.

Indiana will play next on Friday at 9 p.m. EDT.
