Oscar De La Hoya to Conor McGregor: ‘I never challenged you’

Oscar De La Hoya said he’d stop Conor McGregor in two rounds but claims he never challenged the MMA star to a fight.

Conor McGregor responded to Oscar De La Hoya, who said on CBS Sports’ State of Combat podcast that he would need only two rounds to take out the MMA star, by Tweeting:

“I accept your challenge, Oscar de la Hoya,”

One problem from De La Hoya’s perspective: There was no challenge.

The Golden Boy, 47, Tweeted on Friday: “For the record: McGregor, I never challenged you. I was just asked a question and I simply spoke the truth.”

Doesn’t sound like a guy who wants to get back into the ring, does it?

De La Hoya, now a promoter, hasn’t fought since he was battered and then stopped by Manny Pacquiao in 2008. Still, he made it sound as if the 31-year-old McGregor would have no chance against him under boxing rules.

“Two rounds. Come on, brother. Two rounds!” De La Hoya said. “Because one thing about me, I went for the kill always. And look, Conor McGregor, I love him in the octagon, I respect him, I watch him all the time. But the boxing ring is a whole different story. A whole different story.”

McGregor has fought only once under boxing rules, when he was overmatched and stopped in 10 rounds by Floyd Mayweather in a ridiculously lucrative showdown.

However, Mayweather was seven years younger than De La Hoya and out of the ring only two years.
