With all of his success with recruiting, hiring a quality staff, and convincing a few key players to stay, sometimes we all forget this is Dan Lanning’s first rodeo as a head coach.
He’s been an assistant throughout his career and now that he’s at the helm of a major college program, Lanning is faced with a whole new set of problems and priorities that he just didn’t have to face as a coordinator.
That’s why, along with winning games of course, Lanning is looking for growth for the program and that starts Friday with the first practice.
Hopefully, that first practice looks better than the first practice in the spring (and) hopefully that first scrimmage is well organized and detailed.
He also wakes up in the middle of the night with ideas for that growth to occur. That might not make his family too happy, but if those ideas lead to wins, conference championships, and more, all will be forgiven in the Lanning house.
Lanning says that this offseason has been different for him as a head coach now rather than a coordinator. Says he often wakes up in the middle of the night to jot down notes on how to get better and further that growth mindset.
