One college football reporter thinks Maalik Murphy deserves more NFL draft hype

New Duke quarterback Maalik Murphy hasn’t gained much traction during the offseason, but The Athletic’s Ari Wasserman thinks that’s a shame.

Despite being a former four-star prospect who won two games for the Texas Longhorns last season and beating out Arch Manning for the backup job, Duke quarterback [autotag]Maalik Murphy[/autotag] hasn’t gotten much publicity as an NFL draft prospect.

The Athletic college football reporter Ari Wasserman thinks that’s a shame.

In a new podcast episode, Wasserman credited Murphy as one of the 10 players he’s most excited for this season after he thought the newest Blue Devil popped at Elite 11 camps.

“In a world where, like, Anthony Richardson is a top-10 pick in the NFL draft, think about the actual physical tools that Maalik Murphy has,” Wasserman said. “He turns out to be really, really good as a starter and gets drafted really high.”

Last season with the Longhorns, as a redshirt freshman, Murphy compiled 477 passing yards with three touchdowns and interceptions apiece. He led Texas to a 35-6 win over BYU and an overtime victory over Kansas State in his two starts.

Murphy’s Duke career gets underway against Elon on August 30.
