Ole Miss’ Matthew Murrell issues statement on 2023 NBA draft

Murrell led the team in scoring, assists and 3-pointers, and was second in the SEC in minutes per game.

Ole Miss junior Matthew Murrell announced this week that he will declare for the 2023 NBA draft while retaining the right to return to school next season.

Murrell posted averages of 14.4 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.1 assists on 36.5% shooting from the field in 30 games with the Rebels. He led the team in scoring, assists and 3s (62), and was second in the SEC in minutes per game (34.4).

The 6-foot-4 guard emerged as a strong scorer who can also defend at a high level. Though he converted just 30.4% from 3-point range, Murrell has great form and was able to get hot in various games: He tied a home record of eight 3s on Feb. 28 against No. 25 Texas Tech.

Murrell will have the opportunity to go through the pre-draft process and gain feedback from executives and scouts. He could also be among the prospects invited to compete in either the draft combine or G League Elite Camp next month in Chicago, Illinois.

He will have until May 31 to withdraw from the draft and return to school.
