After reportedly suffering an Achilles injury on Aug. 5, DL Marcus Hicks underwent surgery on Tuesday.

His father, Kelvin Hicks, detailed their early-morning journey, including a lengthy road trip, via a Twitter post at 5:19 a.m. on Tuesday morning. The tweet featured a photo of Hicks wearing a medical boot and holding a pair of crutches in a waiting room.

The tweet was geotagged from McBride Orthopedic Hospital Clinic in Edmond, OK, about two hours from Hicks’ hometown — Wichita, KS.

After redshirting in 2019, the 6-foot-5, 272 lb. DL was expected to contend for playing time right off the bat this season. And that’s not just a product of defensive coordinator Alex Grinch’s affinity for deep rotations.

Hicks has bulked up significantly since arriving on campus at 265 lb. That, along with a full season spent under Grinch and his Speed D philosophy had Hicks primed for a dazzling debut in 2020.

Though the severity of the injury is still unknown at this time, it’s clear that the Sooners will be starting the season without Hicks. Whether he returns this season or next is yet to be seen.

Coming out of Wichita Northwest High School, Hicks was a highly-touted prospect. He was the sixth-highest rated defensive recruit in OU’s 2019 class.

247Sports rated him a four-star prospect, the No. 21 weak-side DE and the No. 3 player out of Kansas. He chose OU over offers from Ohio State, Notre Dame, Florida and Texas.
