Oklahoma WR CeeDee Lamb says he met with 49ers

The 49ers are doing their homework and meeting with some of the draft’s top wide receivers.

The 49ers’ list of pre-draft meetings now contains one of the top two receivers in this year’s class. Oklahoma wide receiver CeeDee Lamb said Friday on an Instagram Live session that the 49ers are one of the teams he’s talked with during the pre-draft process.

Meetings during the COVID-19 era are limited to video chats and phone calls, and it isn’t a huge surprise the 49ers are doing their due diligence with one of the draft’s top receivers in a year where that position appears to top the team’s list of needs.

Lamb’s fit in San Francisco is an interesting one. Some evaluations tab him as DeAndre Hopkins, while others have him as a Dez Bryant-type player.

Two things jump out when watching him – he is an after-the-catch monster and a consistent winner on contested throws. Whether he’s capable of running the route tree 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan requires is up for debate, but it’s clear he has the skills to be a productive player in the NFL.

Lamb has good size at 6-2, 198 pounds, and he paired that size with very good production in college. He caught 173 passes for 3,292 yards and 32 touchdowns in just three seasons with the Sooners.

It’s pretty rare that Lamb simply beats a corner and creates a ton of space, but his penchant for not allowing defensive backs to bother him when they’re in his area often makes up for it. His after-the-catch ability is also intriguing in an offense like Shanahan’s that can create so much open space for receivers.
