The top five eludes Brent Venables’ Oklahoma Sooners’ after week three’s action. The Sooners remained at No. 6 in the latest USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll.
In other words, nothing has changed for the Sooners. They were ranked as high as sixth and as low as ninth by the surveyed coaches.
Lots of things happened elsewhere in the rankings.
Ahead of the Sooners, Michigan jumped Clemson to take the No. 4 spot, while Georgia jumped Alabama for No. 1. That leaves two SEC teams, two Big Ten teams and an ACC team ahead of OU.
USC remains at OU’s heels, this time at No. 7 after being ranked ahead of Oklahoma State, who comes in at No. 8.
Baylor’s at No. 17, and Texas is No. 19 after both teams won in week three. The Big 12 still has four teams in the top 25.
After a great start to the season, Washington has joined the top 25 for the first time in 2022. The Huskies are coming off a big win against the then No. 11 ranked Michigan State.
Meanwhile, after nearly falling out of the rankings entirely after a week one loss to Georgia, Oregon has worked its way back to No. 18 after defeating BYU 41-20. BYU, meanwhile, fell nine spots to No. 23.
Other than some teams flipping spots, the top six remained the same from a week ago. Until one of those teams loses, it’s unlikely Oklahoma will move much higher than six. But it’s a long season and OU still has three games against ranked opponents on their schedule.
