Oklahoma Sooners Snapshot Profile: No. 56 Chris Murray

As spring camp continues in Norman, a depth chart overview of Chris Murray.

Evaluating the current roster, Sooners Wire profiles the current players with center Chris Murray up next.

In 2020 after transferring from UCLA, Murray played in five games in a limited role for the Sooners (64 snaps) at right guard. He missed the first four games while waiting for his eligibility waiver from the NCAA.

At guard for the Bruins, Murray helped pave the way for running back Joshua Kelley in the trenches who recorded back-to-back 1,000-yard rushing seasons. He was part of a formidable front five that led to five straight 200-yard rushing games in 2019.

With the departure of Creed Humphrey to the NFL draft, Murray will take over the center position in Crimson and Cream. Offensive line coach, Bill Bedenbaugh confirmed he believes “center is his best position” and Murray will assume an increased leadership role calling out protections. It will be his job to ensure Spencer Rattler is protected and runners have holes.

Depth Chart Overview

Murray is projected to be Oklahoma’s starting center in 2021. He will have big shoes to fill after Creed Humphrey left for the pros. Murray will be tasked with informing his linemates pre-snap which defenders to pick up and recognizing blitzes from multiple angles. He will set the tone for counter pulls to initiate an effective screen and running game. Offensive lineman are often the unsung heroes on the football field and Murray will certainly be a guy to watch this upcoming season.
