Oklahoma’s safety room is one of the deeper position groups on the team. With roster limits changing in college football, it’s not surprising to see some attrition. According to 247Sports and Sooners Illustrated’s Collin Kennedy, Sooners safety [autotag]Mykel Patterson-McDonald[/autotag] is entering the [autotag]transfer portal[/autotag].

Patterson-McDonald played his high school ball at Westmoore High in Oklahoma. He was a three-star prospect in the [autotag]2024 recruiting class[/autotag]. He’ll have four years of eligibility remaining after redshirting in 2024.

In high school, Patterson-McDonald displayed an aggressive, ball-hawk mentality and a willingness to attack receivers at the catch point.

Oklahoma will have [autotag]Robert Spears-Jennings[/autotag] and [autotag]Peyton Bowen[/autotag] leading the position in 2025. Patterson-McDonald was a part of a 2024 recruiting class that saw the Sooners also bring in Michael Boganowski, Jaydan Hardy, and Reggie Powers III. In the [autotag]2025 recruiting class[/autotag], the Sooners added Omarion Robinson and Marcus Wimberly to their deep safety room.

According to Brandon Drumm of OUInsider (Subscription Required), there’s a belief that Mykel Patterson-McDonald will return to the Sooners as a preferred walk-on.

Drumm said, “That said, MPM had to hop in the portal by rule, to remove him from scholarship at OU. He will remove his name shortly and will have his tuition and day-to-day schooling and funding paid for by the collective moving forward.”
