Saturday’s Red River Showdown between the Oklahoma Sooners and the visiting Texas Longhorns was a matchup between the best offense and best defense in the Big 12.
It was the Texas defense that prevailed in the win, holding the Sooners to 27.3% shooting from the floor. The Texas defense is legit and they’re going to cause teams problems in the Big 12 and NCAA tournaments.
But that loss shouldn’t erase everything that Oklahoma has done this season. They’re still the No. 2 team in the Big 12 and will be one of the teams to beat in the Big 12 tournament. But after the loss, the Sooners dropped from No. 9 to No. 13 in ESPN’s latest women’s basketball power rankings.
The Sooners had won six in a row before running into the Texas buzz saw for a second time this season. Of course, the Longhorns are a dangerous matchup not just for the Sooners but for every team in the Big 12. Oklahoma still has a lot on the line this week, ending the regular season with its Bedlam rivalry game at nearby Oklahoma State. The Sooners hope to go into the Big 12 tournament with at least the No. 2 seed and make a strong push at being an NCAA top-16 seed for the second year in a row. – M.A. Voepel, ESPN
Oklahoma’s offense will make them a contender in tournament play, but they’ll have to figure out how to attack the Texas defense better if they want to make a run in the conference tourney.
