Oklahoma holds heavy lead in all-time series with Iowa State, but has split last four meetings

Oklahoma holds a huge all-time series lead over Iowa State, but has split the last four meetings in the Lincoln Riley era.

No. 11 Oklahoma (7-2, 6-2) and No. 7 Iowa State (8-2, 8-1) are set to collide for the second time this season on Saturday in the Big 12 Championship Game.

The first game was one of the more disappointing outings of the Alex Grinch era with the Sooner defense really struggling to keep the Cyclones under wraps. Iowa State running back Breece Hall had 139 yards on the ground and two touchdowns in the win.

Saturday will mark the 86th all-time meeting between the two programs with Oklahoma holding a gigantic 76-7-2 series lead. Although, Matt Campbell and the Cyclones have managed to win two of the last four matchups including the one earlier this season.

At one point, the Sooners managed to win a staggering 23 straight games in the series from 1937-1959 including the biggest blowout of the series with a 63-0 shellacking by Oklahoma in Ames in 1946.

This all gets thrown out the window given the recent history of these teams, though. Lincoln Riley is just 2-2 against Matt Campbell since he took over as head coach of the Sooners and the 2019 game came down to a two-point conversion. Simply put, Campbell knows what to do against Riley.

The rubber match between two of the elite young coaches in football will be for the Big 12 title Saturday at 11:00 a.m. CT at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
