Oklahoma capped off their regular season by winning their sixth straight Big 12 title on Saturday in a 27-21 win over Iowa State.
The attention quickly turned after the game to where the Sooners would then land in the final College Football Playoff rankings of the year to be released Sunday morning. They are in, and Oklahoma lands just on the outside looking in of the national semifinals at No. 6.
It has truly been an incredible turnaround from where the season began with the 1-2 start. To get this final ranking is incredible and a large testament to Lincoln Riley and the coaching staff.
However, this ranking will also provide a heavy does of “what could have been?” Had the Sooners not blown a large lead to Kansas State in the second game of the year…they very well could be in the College Football Playoff right now. But that is all speculation that we will never know the answer to.
As for the teams that made it, Alabama is unsurprisingly the No. 1 team and will face No. 4 Notre Dame. The other matchup will be No. 2 Clemson and No. 3 Ohio State. Texas A&M wound up as the first team out at No. 5.
Sooners Wire will provide updates on what this means for Oklahoma’s bowl selection when we get them.
