In June of 2022, we sat down with Oklahoma analyst Kegan Reneau for our Riley Files podcast series. Simply stop and consider whether anything about this analysis of Caleb Williams was oversold or excessive:
“Caleb Williams is your best quarterback in college football? There’s no ifs or buts about it in my mind,” Reneau said. “This kid has every tool you’re looking for. You want to talk about an NFL team. You wanna talk about building around the guy that has Aaron Rodgers-like qualities working in and out of the pocket but with more athleticism. That’s been where I’ve gone to in my comparisons for him. I’ve thrown out some Steve McNair comps from back in the day. I think they make a lot of sense.
“Don’t get me wrong. I know USC’s had a lot of really, really good quarterbacks over the years. I don’t know if USC fans (in the summer of 2022, not today) quite get what they have in Caleb Williams. They’re gonna see it. Lincoln Riley doesn’t get this kid to come from Oklahoma (for no reason). It’s gonna look a lot different out there. This is a kid who is destined to probably be the number one pick in the 2024 NFL draft.”
Seems pretty accurate to us.
