A story that set the Oklahoma fan base on fire early Friday morning was a report from Stadium’s Brett McMurphy that Nebraska is looking to get out of their scheduled game with the Sooners in Norman coming up this September. Understandably, this has had an immediate negative reaction as both fan bases, and just fans of college football in general, are looking forward to the two old rivals rekindling the series.
Now, Oklahoma athletic director Joe Castiglione has weighed on the report and has said the full intention is for the game to still be played.
“The Oklahoma-Nebraska football series represents one of the most unique traditional rivalries in college football,” Castiglione said in a statement he released on Twitter. “It features fierce competition, yet genuine mutual respect between the programs and fan bases. The planning of this game was intentional as we mark the 50th anniversary of the Game of the Century. We’ve been looking forward to celebrating these two storied programs and have collaborated on various aspects of what promises to be a special weekend. We fully intend and expect to play the game as it is scheduled.”
Getting out of an agreement on a long-scheduled game is going to be extremely difficult to do for the Cornhuskers and it sure sounds like Castiglione isn’t planning to make it any easier for them. The Sooners obviously still want and intend for the game to played. This will obviously be a story to monitor as the days and weeks go on.
Sooners Wire will continue to provide updates as they become available throughout the offseason.
