While you were likely wallowing away in another poor outing by the Ohio State basketball team, there was another OSU squad going for a conference title, and this time it was on the ice. The Ohio State women’s hockey team beat No. 1 Minnesota, coming from two goals down to take home the WCHA Tournament crown.
Early on, it looked like the Golden Gophers were well on their way to a coronation of sorts, heading into the third and final period up 2-0. But Ohio State didn’t quit and managed to get its first goal just over three minutes into the third period when Sara Saekkinen lit the lamp to make it 2-1. It stayed that way until a Sophie Jaques tied it 2-2 with 9:34 to play. Both teams then traded some pretty good scoring chances, but the game went into overtime.
Then the drama ensued. Jacques was again the hero in overtime, collecting her own shot on a rebound while on the power play and sneaking it through the Minnesota goaltender for the game-winner, a 3-2 triumph.

The title is the second-ever WCHA championship for the Buckeyes. The ladies also won it back in 2020. Now it’s off to the postseason where Ohio State has a lot of momentum to perhaps make a deep run.
