The Los Angeles Rams probably wouldn’t change a thing about their Super Bowl win two years ago, but you can bet Odell Beckham Jr. wishes he was healthy enough to finish the game with his teammates. Unfortunately, he missed more than half the game with a knee injury that he suffered in the second quarter after already catching two passes for 52 yards and the opening touchdown.
Had he not gotten hurt, Beckham very easily could’ve gone on to be named Super Bowl MVP over Cooper Kupp, who had eight catches for 92 yards and two touchdowns – including the game-winner from Matthew Stafford.
In an interview with Peter King of NBC Sports, Beckham said he was poised to have a massive day before getting hurt. He says he would’ve had 15 catches and around 250 yards in that game, predicting the Rams would’ve won by 25 points instead of just three.
“People have no idea what I was actually gonna do that day,” Beckham told King. “It was gonna be the day where I catch 15 balls, maybe 250 yards. The gameplan was for me. We would’ve beat ‘em 42-17.”
That stat line is obviously a bold prediction, but it’s not crazy to think Beckham would’ve gotten a lot of opportunities in that game. Sean McVay said himself on “The Pivot” podcast recently that the Rams were running the offense through Beckham in the Super Bowl, so he was going to see an abundance of targets.
“He was a key factor and really, we had an idea that based on what we thought could’ve occurred going into that Super Bowl that he was gonna get some opportunities,” McVay said. “And with the opps he had, he was 2-for-2 at that point. He was gonna continue to be the guy that we were really calling the game through. He knew that, too. He just had that look in his eye.”
We’ll never know what Beckham was poised to do in that Super Bowl but based on what he and McVay have said about it, he was likely to put up some big numbers against the Bengals. With so much attention being paid to Kupp, Beckham was going to be an integral part of the offense that day.
