The good news: the Caesars Sportsbooks in Las Vegas has pegged the Miami Dolphins at -110 odds to draft Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa in April’s 2020 NFL Draft. You won’t find any other team in the league with better odds than that.
The bad news? The Dolphins aren’t the only team listed at -110. The Detroit Lions, who pick 3rd in the draft order, are also listed as co-favorites to secure Tagovailoa’s services come April — despite the fact that the Lions have an established (and successful) starting quarterback in Matt Stafford already on the roster.
The whispers of Detroit’s interest aren’t overly surprising, but seeing the betting lines fall in line with such favorable odds for Detroit is something unexpected. It may ultimately be a numbers game — Tagovailoa’s talent level is notable and if his medical check-ups clear out, there’s no way he should last long after Chase Young is presumably selected by the Washington Redskins.
There’s plenty of time and ample more information needed before the Dolphins have to make a decision on potentially trading with Detroit. With Miami owning so much of the draft’s early picks, no dominos should fall without their consent, at the very least. Detroit is always going to pick up the phone and call Miami about countering offers — because the Dolphins could match any offer at will if they want to.
The question is how deep is the Dolphins’ thirst for Tagovailoa and whether or not Miami is willing to call the Lions’ bluff about drafting him once April rolls around.
