Notre Dame to meet with Tommy Rees in an effort to keep him out of Baton Rouge

Looks like LSU is targeting Notre Dame’s offensive coordinator.

Marcus Freeman isn’t the only coordinator that Brian Kelly is trying to bring with him to LSU. Pete Sampson of The Athletic reporting that Notre Dame is set to meet with offensive coordinator Tommy Rees in regards to his future plans.

Brian Kelly and LSU have a proposed offer on the table for Rees to receive $400,000 more than he is currently receiving with the Fighting Irish. Rees is a former quarterback that returned to South Bend as the quarterbacks’ coach in 2017, he was promoted to offensive coordinator in 2020. With Kelly, Rees, and Freeman at the helm, Notre Dame won 21 games and lost three in that stretch. LSU is 11-11 over the same timeframe.

It would make sense for Rees to want to stay with Notre Dame given that he played for the team and returned as a coach in 2017. It also doesn’t make a lot of sense to try and keep Rees if they don’t have a head coach. The new head coach should have full autonomy to pick and choose who will be on his staff. Forcing a marriage of this regard often times doesn’t work in your favor.

We should know more in the coming days as to whether Reese and/or Freeman will be heading to the Bayou along with Kelly. Coordinators following their head coaches to their next stop is fairly common, so this shouldn’t be a shock to anyone that Kelly is attempting to make it happen.
