No. 23. Lou Holtz
Responsible for restoring Notre Dame after what was the Gerry Faust debacle, Holtz led the Irish to their most-recent national championship in 1988. His 100 wins are the most ever in Notre Dame history and instead of his story being one of leaving too early like those above, you can look back and wonder simply “what if” in regards to his many close calls at chasing championship number-two.

Holtz didn’t just have success at Notre Dame as he’s the only coach to ever lead six different teams to bowl games and four to top-twenty finishes in the AP Poll as he took South Carolina from laughing stock to the Outback after his time at Notre Dame.
