Things got off to a sour start last week when North Carolina lost on the road at Syracuse fresh off a big road win over the weekend. While UNC did manage to rebound and get a home win over Virginia Tech, the damage was done to their NCAA Tournament resume for a No. 1 seed.
The Tar Heels are currently slotted in as a No. 2 seed going into this week’s action, which features just one game as they head to Charlottesville to take on Virginia on Saturday afternoon. But before the action gets underway, Kyle Boone of CBS Sports provided his grades for the past week.
Boone gave UNC a passing grade of a C with the biggest reason being their defensive collapse against Syracuse:
UNC’s defense collapsed mid-week with a loss at Syracuse where Orange guards JJ Starling and Judah Mintz had a field day. The offense responded with 96 points in a win over Virginia Tech, but there’s some flaws with this Heels defense that are of concern.
North Carolina has just five games left on the year, three of those being at home while the two road games are at Virginia and Duke. They can still make a push for a No. 1 seed, but that is going to require winning out and having a nice run in the ACC Tournament.
But first things first, UNC needs to take care of business on Saturday against the Cavaliers. And get that grade back up to an A.
