With Christian McCaffrey missing Monday Night Football against the New York Jets, Kyle Shanahan’s offense leaned on backup running back Jordan Mason. In the season opener on primetime television, the undrafted running back out of Georgia Tech delivered a career-best performance.
Mason rumbled all over the Jets, dominating with a career-high 147 yards rushing with a touchdown on the way to leading the 49ers to their first win of the 2024 campaign, 32-19.
Following the game, the 49ers All-Pro rusher had nothing but praise for his teammate’s breakout effort against the Jets. McCaffrey told reporters in Santa Clara that he was proud of Mason.
I think with someone like him, man. I’m so proud of him. When you’re in a rhythm, you’re in a grove, you let him be. And he showed that. I was so pumped for him. Just everything he’s done all camp. He’s earned that and he balled out and it showed.
…
Congratulated him. We got a special room. He’s right there in the play and someone that is going to help this team a lot this year. I’m happy he’s in our room. We’re happy for him.

If McCaffrey is unable to go in Week 2, Mason will have the chance to double down on his breakout performance on Sunday against the Vikings. The 49ers will travel to Minnesota to face the Vikings on Sunday at 10 a.m. PT.
