Notre Dame’s fourth-ranked baseball team got off to a fast and furious start in the 2022 season as they obliterated Manhattan 17-2 at the Hatter Classic in Deland, Florida.
The Irish smacked the ball all over the yard as they recorded 19 hits and three home runs on the night. A pair of triples in the bottom of the first inning from Spencer Meyers and Carter Putz got the Irish going with an early 2-0 lead.
Five more runs were scored in the third inning, highlighted by a two run home run off the bat of Brooks Coetzee III (pictured). An inning later the floodgates were entirely opened as the Irish crossed six more runs to stretch the lead to 13-0.
Coetzee added his second home run of the game in the sixth inning while Jack Zyska hit his first career home run in the eighth inning to extend the lead to 17-0.
Aidan Tyrell started and recorded four scoreless innings for the Irish while Liam Simon provided three shutout innings in relief.
Notre Dame starts the year 1-0 with the blowout victory and their 17 runs were the most scored in a Fighting Irish season opener since putting up 18 against Florida A&M in 2005.
The Irish return to the field Saturday when they take on the host of the Hatter Classic, Stetson.
