No. 10 North Carolina defeats No. 10 Tennessee in season opener.

No. 11 Tennessee (0-1-0) opened its 2022 season with a 3-0 loss Thursday at No. 10 North Carolina (1-0-0).

Thursday’s contest was the season opener for both schools at Dorrance Field in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

Ashleigh Gambone scored an unassisted goal in the 39th minute for North Carolina.

Tori Hensen scored in the 66th minute to extend North Carolina’s lead to 2-0. Avery Patterson scored in the 77th minute for the Tar Heels.

The Tar Heels outshot Tennessee, 24-12. Six of North Carolina’s scoring chances landed on goal.

The Lady Vols recorded eight shots on goal.

North Carolina goalkeepers Emmie Allen and Marz Johnson each played and recorded four saves.

Redshirt freshman Ally Zazzara made her collegiate debut as Tennessee’s goalkeeper, recording six saves.

Lady Vols’ starting goalkeeper Lindsey Romig missed the match due to an injury.
