NFL Playoffs: Seahawks’ recent history is not great

It’s not as stellar as you might think.

The Seattle Seahawks were bounced from the 2022 playoffs in a blowout loss to the San Francisco 49ers. While many expected such an outcome, and could be forgiving of the situation overall considering this team was not “supposed” to make the playoffs, it is another chapter in a concerning recent trend.

Ever since losing Super Bowl XLIX to the New England Patriots, the Seattle Seahawks have not been an exceptional playoff team. In fact, during this stretch the Seahawks are only 3-6 in the postseason, despite going 69-43-1 in the regular season and winning the NFC West twice.

What makes matters a little worse, is the three playoff wins haven’t exactly been all that impressive.

  • 2015 – Seahawks beat Teddy Bridgewater’s Vikings 10-9 as kicker Blair Walsh missed a 27-yard field goal to win the game.
  • 2016 – Seahawks beat the Detroit Lions 26-6, led by an injured Matthew Stafford.
  • 2019 – Seahawks beat the Philadelphia Eagles 17-9 with 40-year old backup quarterback playing in relief of a concussed Carson Wentz.

In each game, the Seahawks skirted by as their defense did not allow an opposing touchdown. Unfortunately, in their six losses, their opponents found the end zone multiple times.

In the most obvious statement of the weekend, the Seahawks need to figure out how to win some playoff games when their opponents are actually able to score.
