NFL insiders expect Giants to retain Joe Schoen, Brian Daboll

Two NFL insiders believe the New York Giants will stay the course and retain both GM Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll.

The New York Giants will face the Philadelphia Eagles this Sunday to close out their 2024 regular season schedule.

With a win, they will finish 4-13. A loss drops them to 3-14. Both outcomes will be scrutinized on Monday aka Black Monday in the NFL — the day many teams rid themselves of their shot callers in the front office and head coaches.

This will complete the third season of the Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll regime, an era that began with a surprise postseason appearance in Year 1 and then stumbled into free fall the next two seasons.

There’s a lot of debate on what co-owner John Mara and his advisors will do next week. Should they fire everyone and start from scratch? That hasn’t worked over the past decade, so maybe they try a different tactic.

It makes little sense to fire one and keep the other as they are closely tied together. They both own this situation.

Conor Orr of Sports Illustrated believes the Giants will continue on with Schoen and Daboll.

I think Brian Daboll deserves a chance to come back for the New York Giants. The team is still very light on talent but the rookies who showed promise—Malik Nabers and Tyrone Tracy Jr.—each eclipsed 1,000 scrimmage yards, while Nabers will very likely also break Puka Nacua’s rookie reception record (though he trails fellow rookie Brock Bowers by four).

Orr’s collègue, Albert Breer, agrees.

I don’t believe either Giants owner John Mara wants to pull the plug on their head coach…I think meeting with Daboll and Joe Schoen, and getting their plan out from a dark couple of years, and to get a quarterback to pair with a promising young core, will help determine who stays and who goes.

Most at Giants Wire tend to agree. The talent is there if they can keep and harness it on the field.

They mainly need to find a serviceable quarterback to make the offense run. We saw what happened last week when Drew Lock delivered a stellar performance. The Giants scored 45 points and knocked the Colts from the postseason picture.

Schoen is coming off a solid draft in which all six of his draft picks made significant contributions in their first season. Daboll still has the confidence of his players and the locker room and several veterans have publicly said they believe he should return.
