NFL free agency ‘legal tampering period’ begins

The Cardinals can begin to negotiate deals with free agents starting at noon ET on Monday.

The 2023 NFL league year does not officially begin until Wednesday but free agency really begins Monday.

Starting at noon ET, the “legal tampering” window opens. While soon-to-be free agents are still technically under contract until Wednesday, negotiating may begin.

What is allowed before Wednesday?

Teams and player agents of impending free agents (not players who have been tagged with the franchise or transition tag) can be in contact and can negotiate contracts.

Teams may not contact players directly and players cannot visit team facilities until the new league year begins.

Deals can be agreed to and many will be reported, but none can be made official or announced by teams until Wednesday when the new league year begins at 4 p.m. ET.

Arizona Cardinals free agents

The Cardinals have many impending free agents. They include cornerback Byron Murphy, defensive lineman Zach Allen and offensive linemen Kelvin Beachum, Will Hernandez and Justin Pugh.
