NFL free agency: Jets “open” to Geno Smith reunion

Geno Smith is about to earn himself a new contract, whether it’s with the Seahawks or a new team… or perhaps an old one?

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith picked the right time to have an award-winning career year. The 2022 Comeback Player of the Year is a hot commodity and is about to earn himself a new contract, whether it is with the Seahawks or perhaps a new team…

…or an old one?

As we approach the start of the new league year and the official beginning of free agency, rumors are likely to heat up, especially with the NFL Scouting Combine starting tomorrow. On Monday, it was reported by Albert Breer the New York Jets would be open to a potential reunion with the former quarterback they drafted.

As they have been for the overwhelming majority of their franchise, the Jets are desperate for a competent quarterback. Fueled by a ferocious defense, New York started the season 5-2 before plummeting with a dismal 2-8 finish. The primary culprit: horrendous play from former No. 2 overall pick quarterback Zach Wilson. Abysmal play from Wilson thwarted a potentially resurgent season for the Jets.

So with a glaring need at the most important position in the game, it only makes sense New York would be interested in the quarterback they selected in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft. From 2013-2016, Smith was a quarterback for the Jets. Unfortunately, injuries and maturity issues brought about the end of his time with Gang Green.

However, a lot has changed since Smith left the Big Apple. Smith does not resemble the player he was in New York, and is among the top options in free agency this year.

To his credit, Smith has always stayed positive and humble regarding his tenure with the Jets. Carefully, not burning any bridges.
