Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott is in line to sign a colossal contract extension that should make him one of the highest-paid players in the NFL, as the debate rages on over whether Prescott is worthy of such a deal. Cowboys exec Stephen Jones has said that Prescott’s new deal is the team’s “No. 1 priority” in the offseason, but according to a report from the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Prescott could be looking for an annual value of around $34 million.
According to Cowboys legend Emmitt Smith, who famously missed two games during a contract holdout to become the league’s top-paid rusher in 1993, Prescott should give the Cowboys a break and take less money to allow the team financial flexibility. During an appearance on The Lefkoe Show, Smith suggested Prescott could sacrifice millions per year in salary and try to recoup that salary via endorsement deals.

Dak Prescott’s contract situation:“How much money are you willing to leave on the table? The Cowboys are a marketable organization…
Instead of taking 35, would you take 28? Leave some for Amari and pick up the rest in endorsements.”@LefkoeShow pic.twitter.com/coZn8iPVpy

Fans and analysts lined up to call out Smith for his take.
The Emmitt Smith part of this Dak story is hilarious to me. Tells Zeke to get his money, tells Prescott to take a discount.

tbh it is extremely frustrating how Emmitt Smith – one of the greatest players if not the greatest in Cowboys history – contaminated so much of the way people are thinking about this https://t.co/qXGyLhQ3kU

The same Emmitt Smith who held out to get his money. https://t.co/VRaVZqcW7z

This is the same Emmitt Smith that held out for biggest RB contract ever right? https://t.co/FQ4KiGm56X

Emmitt Smith is wrong for coming out and saying that Dak needs to take a team friendly deal. Emmitt was the same guy who held out well into the regular season of 1993. He’s a good guy, but also a hypocrite in this take.

Emmitt Smith once held out because he wanted more money. After that, he FULLY supported Zeke while he was holding out for more money. Now he wants to encourage Dak to take less money? FOH! He lost my respect on that one. https://t.co/J00njAlRf6

"You think I'm taking a 20% cut in the name of giving everybody else money??? Come on man that's RIDICULOUS"
