The NFL playoffs could look a lot different next January if a report by Adam Schefter on the upcoming new CBA proves to be true.
Schefter reported Wednesday night that under the current CBA proposal the NFL playoffs would expand to seven teams in each conference and that only one team would get a bye week.
Those would be some huge changes, as we’ve been used to seeing the top two teams in each conference get rewarded with a bye.
This is just a proposal and isn’t official but it could get passed soon. Owners also want a 17-game season, which players have balked at in the past, and just three preseason games.
I personally think the NFL should just stick with what they have with the playoff format (do we really need two more bad teams in the playoffs) and stay with 16 games because player safety should be a thing, but I’m not the NFL.
Here’s more details from Schefter:
Under the current transformational CBA proposal that NFL owners are pushing for, there would be more drama at the end of the regular season…and six – six! – games on wild-card weekend. Imagine three wild-card games on Saturday, then three more Sunday.

Twitter sounded off on these possible changes:
Precisely zero people asked for this @NFL

Honestly my biggest gripe with the new NFL playoff format is we’re almost guaranteed to get an under .500 team in the playoffs every year and that just makes it feel lesser.

“You know what would make this already perfect playoff system work even more perfecter……giving the most average teams a better chance at making it! Yeah!!!”

So. You no longer have to be good, just good enough. Right @NFL ? Baseball is about to screw everything up and NASCAR already has. Leave it alone. https://t.co/RYmaB1sEEv

14 teams in nfl playoffs. Looks like the cowboys are winning the super bowl 🤪🤩

Why is every league trying to expand the postseason?
The Postseason should be exclusive in every sport
If the NFL is going to modify the format–make it so crappy division winners (Cowboys & Eagles this year) aren't allowed to host playoff games. https://t.co/NedGBqheTd
