Usually, being compared to Peyton Manning — one of the greatest quarterbacks in football history — is an honor for any garden variety signal caller. This was not the case for Jared Goff in advance of the Detroit Lions’ traditional Thanksgiving game, this time against the Green Bay Packers.
During the pregame festivities, Fox cameras panned over to Goff, who had his eyes closed at the worst possible time. Why? It appeared Goff might have been wearing his helmet too tight because he had an egregiously large red mark all over his forehead. Such an appearance naturally led NFL fans watching the game on Turkey Day to compare Goff to Peyton Manning — who famously often also had a giant red “iron” mark on his forehead during his playing career.
Again, it’s not the Manning comparison you want if you’re Goff!

If it’s any consolation for Goff, the Lions probably have their best team in six decades. And he’s enjoying what might be the finest season of his career thanks in large part to offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and a talented supporting cast. So, the roasting of his forehead on a holiday in front of the entire country aside, Goff still has much to be thankful for this Thanksgiving.
That’s definitely something!
