The first round of the 2020 NFL Draft on Thursday — broadcast on ABC, ESPN and NFL Network — will start with a message from former Indianapolis Colts and Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning, according to Peter King of NBC Sports.
In an effort to limit the spread of COVID-19, the draft will be broadcast in a TV studio setting this year with no fans or prospects (or teams) at an actual event. Teams will submit their picks online.
“Manning will voice a two-and-a-half-minute piece paying tribute to those on the front lines of the fight against COVID-19, and on football and its place in the country in these times,” according to King. “I’m told it’ll hit a range of emotions and end in hope.”
Manning has made several videos in recent weeks, encouraging Americans to stay positive and help others during the coronavirus.
“You are all working endless hours to keep us safe and healthy and I can’t even imagine how we would make it through this without you,” Manning said in a video message to the medical staff at University of Colorado Hospital last week.
“Please know that all of you are in my prayers, you have my gratitude and that of an entire community. Stay safe, stay strong and thank you again for your tremendous work and efforts.”
