Notre Dame saw their first player go off the board in the 2020 NFL Draft as tight end Cole Kmet was selected by his hometown Chicago Bears with the 43rd overall pick.
The Bears take a tight end to fill the void that their offense has been searching for. They’ve tried to run a similar offensive to that of the Kansas City Chiefs or Philadelphia Eagles but have failed after throwing money at Trey Burton a couple years ago and signing veteran Jimmy Graham this off-season.
Kmet might not have the longest track record at Notre Dame but showed a high ceiling. Kmet, 6-6, 260 pounds caught 43 passes for 515 yards and six touchdowns his final year at Notre Dame. He was widely-regarded as the most talented tight end in this draft.
Kmet continues the streak of Notre Dame starting tight ends getting drafted as each regular starter has been selected since 2005. Kmet will get a chance to play and develop on the fly for the Bears are their search to fill the tight end spot is a huge one.
