With the NFL combine complete, there is new information and new projections about teams and players they might target in the NFL draft next month could change. ESPN’s Todd McShay has a brand new mock draft that reflects those changes after the combine.
For the Arizona Cardinals, he has them landing an offensive lineman considered one of the winners of the combine.
He has them selecting Louisville offensive tackle Mekhi Becton No. 8 overall.
Linemen weighing in at 364 pounds aren’t supposed to run 5.10-second 40 times. Becton has versatility and power, and he obviously moves extremely well for his massive 6-7 frame. And if you’re the Cardinals, you can’t let your 5-10 franchise mobile quarterback continue to take 50 sacks per season. They just locked up D.J. Humphries — the team’s last first-round offensive line selection (2015) — to a new contract, but Marcus Gilbert is headed toward free agency. It’s time to invest another high pick in that line.
Becton becomes the first offensive lineman taken in his mock draft and is the first of three offensive line picks in a row.
Becton could be a great pick because he can play right tackle right away and he can move over in three seasons to be the team’s left tackle after D.J. Humphries’ new contract runs out.
Becton’s play was fantastic in 2019. He has size, length and the combine proved he can move.
He isn’t a receiver, but because of the quality of the receiver class, the Cardinals should still be able to land a talented player who can make an impact in the second or third round.
