New acquisition Seth Curry is ready to play a variety of roles for Sixers

Philadelphia 76ers guard Seth Curry is ready to fill a variety of roles for the team moving forward.

The Philadelphia 76ers had a couple of different needs that had to be filled in the 2020 offseason. The team needed some shooting, they needed another ball-handler, and they needed bench help.

With the new acquisition of Seth Curry, they may have found all three of those needs in him, alone.

Curry shot 45.2% from deep for the Dallas Mavericks in the 2019-20 season and he has a lot of potential to at least shoot that number this season playing next to Ben Simmons. He can also put the ball on the floor and create for himself and others and, depending on his role, will provide a spark off the bench.

“I played point guard for a year in college and even in the league at times when guys were out or coming off the bench,” Curry explained. “I’ve had a role of playing a lot of pick-and-roll and creating off the dribble as well so I feel like I’m a versatile offensive player. Not just a spot-up shooter, that’s the main part of my game, but to have an effective career and play a long time, I have to do it in a lot of different ways. I think I’ve been able to show that thus far.”

As far as shooting the ball, the new front office knows that the Sixers had a ton of success on offense in the past when they had the proper shooting and spacing around Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid. That is why they went out and got Curry as well as Danny Green.

The thing with Curry is that he can put the ball on the floor and he can create his own shot. He can also do it from anywhere as he does not have any favorite spot on the floor.

“If I create good shots for myself, I can make them from any spot on the floor. I don’t really like to put myself in a box and say ‘I like this spot on the court more than any other’,” he said with a laugh. “I’m sure if you ask Daryl or the analytic guys, they’ll tell you a different thing so I don’t really check my analytical numbers as much as other guys. In my mind, I can make high percentage shots anywhere.”

The type of skill set that Curry has to offer is exactly what the Sixers have been missing for a long time. They have been in need of somebody who can create off the dribble when the shot clock is winding down.

This is not a skill he had coming into the league initially, but over time he put the work in to become a more versatile player.

“I’ve always been a good shooter, it’s just most importantly for me, where I’m getting my shots and how I’m creating shots,” he explained. “If I’m creating the right amount of shots, I will shoot them at a pretty high percentage.”

When training camp opens up Dec. 1, it will be up to coach Doc Rivers to decide how the team will use Curry. However, it appears that he is ready for any role the team puts him in. [lawrence-related id=39554,39542,39539]
