Brooklyn Nets guard Mikal Bridges will be playing for Team USA this summer in the 2023 FIBA World Cup as part of a collection of young talent that is looking to bring home the gold. Bridges has expressed in the past how much representing his country means to him and has taken the liberty of explaining how he ended up being part of the squad.

Bridges, 26, recently made an appearance on the “Podcast P With Paul George” podcast to talk about a host of topics related to Bridges’ experiences in the NBA and what he is looking forward to for next season. It sounds like Bridges did not take the opportunity to play for Team USA lightly.

Bridges explained that Steve Kerr, head coach of Team USA and the NBA’s Golden State Warriors, first approached Bridges about playing in the World Cup this past season while Bridges was with the Phoenix Suns. After that discussion, Bridges had to take care of other things going on in his life like being traded to the Brooklyn Nets sometime after that conversation. Without further ado, here’s the full rundown of what happened as told by Bridges:

“Steve Kerr brought up to me just like the idea of it (playing for Team USA) and I was just like (expletive) yeah. Then, kind of had an idea there and then, ended up going to Brooklyn. Played real well and then, seeing him again and talking about it and kind of at that point, I was really ready for it. So, nothing was holding me back for that unless I had some injury or something happening but no, I was ready. I’m very excited.”
