The 2022 NBA MVP race has been heating up lately. Much of it has been about Joel Embiid and Nikola Jokic with Giannis Antetokounmpo knocking on the door of contention.
After the Nets’ 128-123 win over the Portland Trail Blazers, Kevin Durant asked about his thoughts on the MVP race. He mentioned he’d probably go with Joel Embiid as his pick, but DeMar DeRozan and Ja Morant are in his top three. Jokic was mentioned as someone you could “throw-in.”
“If I had to take a guess, I will go, it’s between Joel Embiid, DeMar DeRozan, Ja Morant for me, those are my top three,” Durant said. “And I’ll probably go Joel. It’s, I mean [Nikola] Jokic, you could throw Jokic in there, but I’ll probably go Joel. I mean there’s so many players playing at a high level man, so like I said the other day, league’s in a great place.”
At one point, Durant was considered the front-runner to win the MVP award when he was sitting atop the NBA scoring leaderboard while leading the Nets to a 27-15 record through 42 games. His MCL sprain caused him to miss too much time to still be considered.

There is around 10 games remaining for most of teams in the NBA, so time is running out for top candidates to solidify their case. Jokic has been gaining ground as of late as the cases for DeRozan and Morant have seemingly dwindled in comparison.
