Florida doesn’t fare well in ESPN’s 64-team playoff championship for 2022

Here’s how the Gators fared in ESPN’s 64-team football championship tournament.

There are still many months ahead before Florida football returns to the gridiron but that has not kept anyone from looking ahead to the 2022 season. Given that we are currently in the midst of March Madness, it makes sense to view the coming campaign through the lens of college basketball’s Big Dance.

Last week, ESPN’s Chris Low published his 64-team playoff semifinal championship bracket for the 2022 college football season, which took an NCAA Tournament approach to college football to shake out the very best team in the nation. Unfortunately for Gators fans, Florida got bumped out of the first round as a No. 4 seed by No. 13 seeded Appalachian State, 24-23. Here is how Low describes the first-round upset.

Here it is, the first big upset of the tournament. Appalachian State quarterback Chase Brice, in his sixth FBS season, rallies the Mountaineers with a pair of fourth-quarter touchdown passes to send Billy Napier and the Gators packing in his first season in Gainesville.

Pretty brutal prediction for the Orange and Blue, to be perfectly honest, and feels like there is a bit of a stain remaining on the team from the Mullen era given the predicted comeback. Of course, this is just a fun thought exercise to play around with, but chances are the Gators would probably do much better.

For what it is worth, Low has No. 1 seed Michigan against No. 4 seed USC and No. 2 seed Clemson against No. 3 seed Oklahoma in the regional semifinals.
