NEW YORK — Brooklyn Nets guard Cam Thomas has been one of the bright spots for a Nets team that is fighting to stay in the Eastern Conference playoff race. It’s clear that Thomas has been getting more attention from opposing defenses, but it also seems that the officiating is making Thomas work harder for his points nowadays.
“That’s a good question,” Thomas said after Tuesday’s 118-110 loss to the Boston Celtics after being asked for his opinion on how he is being officiated now compared to how he was officiated in the beginning of the season. Thomas put up 26 points and four assists in the loss, but he was noticeably just 2-for-2 from the free-throw line despite getting plenty of contact over the course of the game.
“I feel like it was pretty good first half of the year,” Thomas explained. “Now, it’s a little tough, you know? You’re taught to be aggressive, go to the basket, make the ref call something. If they don’t call it, there’s nothing you can do.”
While Thomas is known for his stepback jumpshots from mid-range and even three-point range, he does a fair amount of driving to the rim over the course of a game. After Tuesday’s loss, Thomas is averaging 4.8 free-throw attempts per game, but in games like this one, it feels like he should be getting more than two free-throws.
