NCAA looking at extra year of “relief” for athletes affected by championship cancellations due to Coronavirus

The NCAA will reportedly consider a year of relief for athletes affected by Coronavirus cancellations.

Athletes work all their lives to be a part of something special in collegiate athletics. It’s one thing to develop relationships and play for a few years with teammates, but many work to be a part of a championship run.

On that note, it was no doubt a shot to the gut for many that were looking forward to playing in the winter and spring championship events across the NCAA. Almost every kid dreams of being a part of March Madness, but there are other championship events too like the Frozen Four of men’s college hockey, the college world series, and others.

After the NCAA and the various college conferences canceled all athletic events because of Coronavirus concerns, something that got some quick legs was the potential of all those outgoing senior athletes an extra year of eligibility.

And now, it appears as though it is being considered by the NCAA. According to The Athletic’s Nicole Auerbach, the NCAA sent a note to its membership that it believes it would be appropriate to grant “relief” for those affected. What appears to be in consideration is both those that participated in winter and spring sports.

There are certainly some logistics to work out with all of this, but it would be a good move for a pretty horrible series of events that were beyond anyone’s control.

We’re cheering for this one to make its way through.
