The wait between the 2020 NBA Finals and the start of the 2020-21 NBA season will be shorter than many had imagined but given the financial realities of the coronavirus pandemic in the United States, both the league’s owners and the players have both decided that getting back to something that resembles a normal schedule is the most important thing the league can do.
ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski broke the news last night that the NBPA player reps have all voted to approve the NBA’s proposal to start the season on Dec. 22, meaning teams would start their training camps sometime around Dec. 1, giving teams a shortened free agency period to build their rosters. Some details still need to be ironed out but the big ideas have been agreed upon.
In a statement, the NBPA said: “Additional details remain to be negotiated and the NBPA is confident that the parties will reach agreement on these remaining issues relevant to the upcoming season.
The NBA Draft is on Nov. 18 and free agency is expected to follow shortly before then. The trade moratorium is also expected to be lifted a few days before draft day, according to Woj.
